Merida - An Important City in Roman Times

Merida is one of the most important cities of Spain. Located in the Badajoz province of Spain, it is also the capital city of region of Extremadura. Merida was an important city in the Roman era. For the same reason, there are lots of notable buildings in Merida which belong to the Roman era of Spain.

The best way to explore Merida is by foot. It is best to walk in the streets of Merida and enjoy exploring various places. There are monuments, buildings, historical places, museums, parks, restaurants and lots of attractive places in the city. The city is modern as well as ancient at the same time. That makes it an amusing place for people visiting the city every now and then.

There is an ancient aqueduct in Merida which is known as the Aqueduct de los Milagros. It is twenty five meters in height and its length is eight hundred and thirty meters, and it was built in the first century.  Another famous aqueduct here is sixteen hundred meters long and sixteen meters in height. It is known as the Aqueduct de San Lazaro. Similarly there is an Arab fort in the city which was built in the ninth century.

There is a Roman theater in Merida which was built in the year eight BC. This huge ancient Amphitheater had the capacity to accommodate a massive audience of up to fourteen thousand people. Apart from that there is a fifteen meter high arch in Merida which is known as the Arco de Trajano. There is a church in this city named the Basilica Santa Eulalia which has the status of a national monument in the city. There is a museum in the basement of this church which is also a great attraction for visitors.

There are the remains of a Villa from the Roman times which is known as the Roman Mithraeo. This ancient building captures the hearts of visitors from all parts of the world because of its aesthetic appearance. The Roman circus is also famous in the city. It was built in the first century and it has the capacity to accommodate up to 30000 people. It is famous because it was one of the largest ones of its time belonging to the Roman Empire. The Roman temple known as the location espagne Templo de Diana and the Roman bridges perfectly show the glory which Merida enjoyed in the Roman era.
